Pogrom, der Wirtschaftsthriller.

One of the most successfull performances of 1999 was "Pogrom - der Wirtschaftsthriller". It was played in Viennese Stock Exchange (Boerse), and exclusive copyright for the TV-broadcast of this performance belonged to ORF.

We've got to know the history of Germany of the 30s in order to understand what person Heinz played in that performance. Let's remember, what time was that time. If anyone doesn't know, in 1933 Hitler was in office in Germany. The time of all those ideas about "clear blood", Aryan race, world-wide expansion and so on. The occasion for the violence on the Jews was searched for a long time and one day, November 7, 1933, it was found. The Polish Jew Herschel Hrunspan killed the counsellor of the German Embassy, Ernst vom Rat. In response to this act on the night from 9 to 10 November the great German-wide pogrom against the Jews began. Himmler and Goebbels were the organizators of this act, by the order of Fuhrer, of course. 267 synagogues and more than 815 shops and firms, which belonged to the Jews, were destroyed or burned. 20 thousands of Jews were arrested and banished into the concentration camps, 36 men were killed that night. In average damages totalled 25 millions Reichsmarks. By the way, 5 millions was spent for the repair of broken shop-windows, and that night was named "Crystal Night" because of the great quantity of broken glass. "The Jewish question" must be decided, said Hitler, and his faithfull Gering held the special meeting. This meeting became the central event in the history of the anti-Jewish policy of Third Reich. And that's what this "Pogrom" about.

Who is the person played by Weixelbraun?

Josef Goebbels was the closest comrade of Hitler. Yes, Heinz plays such as ugly persons too. But why was he chosen to this role? It's hardly to say that there's any external likeness, but maybe it's because of height? But Goebbels was lower than Heinz for 10 cms.

And who's Goebbels himself? Invalid from birth - crook of the foot. He wasn't even taken to the army because of this defect and his height - 1,53 m. Though he was very self-respect man and he hated whole world. His voice was really too loud and sharp, even more than Hitlers's. Goebbels was the one who burned all the "harmful" books and struggled for the idea of the "clear race". His cynism was able to make his subordinates even a self-murder.
Now we can see what a complicated person was played by Heinz.

What's going on the stage?
The meeting which is held by Gering. He is talking about "the Jewish question". He stresses that all synagogues must be destroyed and Jews must be expelled from the industry and economy. It's a pity we couldn't find more pictures from the Web, but I can assure you, the actors' play was staggering!
